Top 10 Things White People Should Never Ask Black People (or other minorites)
>> Wednesday, November 30, 2011
I've always been that token black girl, you know what I'm talking about. Most of my life I've been people's first "minority" friend. Alot of people are cool, but there are always those handful of ignorant people that ask me DUMB questions. (I censored myself) and yes there are such things as DUMB questions. Your teacher lied to you if she/he told you there weren't. So here is my short list of things not to ask a black girl or any minority for that matter; if you are white, with my commentary. Notice a lot of it has to do with hair. And Yes, people have really asked me these questions. Many of them from the same person, who shall remain nameless.
10. So do you eat black food, like collard greens alot?
What the @#$#? Thats like saying all white people eat chicken and rice, or all Mexicans eat beans and rice.
9. You don't have the typical black girl body. You Know like with a big booty.
Sorry to break it to you we all don't have JLo booties
8.Why don't you wear an afro
Last time I checked this wasn't 1974. I have no problem with people that want to sport them. Its just not my style. and News Flash! Not all black people have the same hair texture!
7. What do you mean you don't dance? Shouldn't that be in your blood?
This has to be one of the most IGNORANT questions I've been asked. seriously.
6. So do you put stuff in your hair?
Define stuff. Don't you put stuff in yours? Gel, Mousse? No we don't put mayonaise or car oil in our hair. and yes people have really asked me if I have put the latter two in my hair.
5.Can you do that to my hair?
No
4.Can you wash your hair?
Can you? What kind of question is that?Yes.
3.How do they do that/attach that to your hair
Oh my lanta.
2. Is that your real hair?
Never, ever, EVER ask anyone that. If you can't tell if its real or fake, keep your mouth shut.
1. Can I touch your hair?
No. Never, ask anyone that either. You may get slapped in the face.
They may seem like harmless questions to you. They are offensive, and if you ask the wrong black girl, you may get a response you don't like. So please just google it. When you ask minorities these questions it makes you look like an ignorant idiot. Seriously. And we then go talk about you behind your back. Then you become that one crazy white friend that asks us really dumb questions.

I like to dance and I have put mayo in my hair! Southerners get asked stupid questions too! It's as if we are still living during the civil rights movement!

For real??? I would never ask someone any of those questions!!! My goodness!
I may have asked you one or two of those questions but I thought we had that kind of relationship where it was safe. Now I am all bummed that I am that STUPID DUMB white girl.
Love you Donna. And just so you know, you weren't my first black friend, but you may have possibly been my first black Mormon friend.
Are Mormon questions still safe?
Hahaha!!! Donna, You are so funny!!! We had a girl in band in high school ask one of my black friends if she turned white if she got a tan...We were all flabbergasted that she was 1)that dumb and 2)that bold to even ask that question.
I think I must really have a black daddy, & nobody told me. ;) I do love collard greens, I used to have a "black booty" back in the day, & I can dance! Not only do I know that "ethnic hair" IS HAIR & can vary greatly in texture, but, I can also shampoo, style, straighten, curl, color, relax, & extend it without having to stop by Advance Auto, or the condiment isle in the grocery store first to buy "hair products". Have I ever rocked out an Afro? You better believe it! It took some work, but it was hot! And one last thing...I think from here on out, you should refer to yourself as a "trophy friend", not "token friend". It sounds much more fabulous, just like you! Love & miss you!
